As a Weight Management Coach, I have a bad habit of checking out the competition. I cause myself to feel anxious about how my website reads. Am I appealing to the ‘right’ people? Am I flashy enough to get noticed online where there are tonnes of weight loss or weight management coaches – but mostly they are called ‘health’ coaches vying for your commitment to their services?
I see the competitions testimonials that make them sound like they are superstar Coaches who have the holy grail of weight management firmly in their grip. I haven’t bothered collecting endless testimonials, because I just want to help educate people so they can feel better about themselves and lose some weight. So I berate myself about, how I should be badgering my clients to give me testimonials. But someone it just doesn’t seem like me.
Here is what I know about weight management…. No Coach can help you lose weight or get healthy – if you don’t really want to. There, I said it. That is the truth. If you don’t want to commit or do the work, or make the effort, then it does not matter who you hire. They will fail you. But it is really you failing yourself.
So after I compare myself to other Coaches, I give my head a shake and get myself back in tune with reality. I am not a flashy, dynamic Coach who sounds like I can cure all body issues. I’m just not that kind of showman. I am a down to earth, basic, no nonsense kind of person. I work with people as a sort of partner in their body issues journey. I don’t really have a ‘program’ that I follow with each person, because each person is unique, so I find a standardized ‘program’ doesn’t always work.
After I clear my head of my comparing, I realize that I am just as good as all the flashy Coaches who have flashy websites and look like they are 20 years old and have never been overweight in their life. I realize that in fact I am better than some of them, because I have experience on my side (I am over 50 years old after all). My picture on my website is a fairly current likeness of me. I like to keep it simple. I also don`t bring in all the woo-woo stuff like tapping or meditation that makes people feel weird. (Unless you are into that – as I am trained in that as well, but I just find the majority of people I work with are not).
So the question was, can you help me lose weight or not? The answer is… Only if you want me to. And that will be the same answer (or should be) the same answer you get from any Weight Loss, Weight Management or Health Coach. All Coaches know, their clients only have success if the clients actually puts in the effort and do the work. The Coach is really only a guidance and accountability partner.
It is like a diet plan. All diet plans work. This is a fact that no Coach disputes. It is really can you (or do you even want to) stick to the program or diet plan? Some are so restrictive or you eat bizarre foods. Most diets fail because people don’t want to live with what they have to do, to follow on these programs. Not to mention that some of these diet plans are just plain unhealthy – even if they help you lose weight - You shouldn’t actually follow those diet plans. So ultimately people don’t stick to their diet plans because they don’t want to.
You need to ask yourself. If you want to lose weight, what kind of Coach do you want to work with? The young flashy coach that has a signature ‘program’ that works for everyone. Or do you want the practical, down to earth (perhaps a little more of life experience) Coach that works with you to find out what is right and what works for you as an individual?
It is really all up to you. Do you want to lose weight, or not?
