The #1 Reason Why You Can’t Lose Weight

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

I used to be complete baffled. I had no idea why I couldn’t lose weight. I would struggle to stick to a diet plan. I had spent around $2000 Herbal Magic. I figured that being weighed 3 times per week would keep me in line with the diet plan. I quit within 4 months. A couple of years later I went to U Weight Loss spent thousands there, being weighed 3 times per week. I quit there within 3 months. I spent $500 hiring a Nutritionist to give me a Meal Plan for weight loss.

I don’t know how much I had spent on diets and weight loss done-for-you meals. But none of these worked for me. I think the most I managed to lose was 13lbs. That was still a long ways off my goal weight. I figured I am just doomed to be fat forever.

But thankfully I refused to give up. There had to be something I was missing. What was it that I didn’t understand about weight loss that was keeping me stuck? So I became a Certified Holistic Nutrition Coach, because I figured I didn’t know enough about nutrition. Surely if I knew what I should be eating, I could lose weight. Nope, I was still fat. So I got my Diploma as a Natural Health Consultant. I learned all about supplements. Surely if I knew about nutrition AND Vitamins and Minerals I could lose weight. Nope, I was still fat.

I wasn’t until I became a Life Coach, that it started to dawn on me, my weight loss problem has nothing to do with knowing what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat. It had to do with my thoughts, habit and behavior that I had about weight loss.

I discovered that no matter how much I wanted to lose weight, I couldn’t seem to do it – BECAUSE I didn’t want to change my lifestyle. It was okay to change what and how much I ate for a short period of time, but I came to the realization that I thought of these weight loss plans as only temporary. Which is basically what diet plans are. You temporarily follow some sort of food plan, which usually eliminates most of the foods you currently eat, and you feel hungry all the time until you finish the diet. At which point you go back to the way you used to eat and slowing (or quickly) gain all the weight back.

It wasn’t until I came to the realization that if I wanted to lose weight, I ultimately had to make lifestyle changes that began with changing my thinking and attitude about weight loss. Not just while on I was on a diet plan, but forever. For example if someone brought cake to work, I used to say, “No thank you. I can’t have any because I’m on a diet.” Now I might say, “No thank you. I just don’t enjoy cake.” At first it was hard as I really did still like cake, but I changed my thinking from I can’t have cake, to I don’t want cake. Eventually I really didn’t enjoy cake as much as I used to. What I kept telling myself eventually became true. This made weight loss so much easier. What you tell yourself and others made all the difference for me, and I know when I work with my clients, it makes all the difference for them as well.

So to sum up, the number one reason why you can’t lose weight is, you are not starting from the inside (mindset) first. Once you change your thinking, habits and behaviour, then the results will show on the outside (your weight).
