When I first started Weight Loss Coaching several years ago, I too had the mindset of if you want to weigh less, you needed to eat less. It worked with some clients, and then I would have some clients who ate like a bird. I would look at how much they ate, and just could not understand why they were not losing weight.
What I have since learned in my years of Coaching… sometime less food does not equal more weight loss. Your body requires a certain amount of nutrients to function properly each day. The exact nutrients varies from person to person, but when I look back to some of my clients food journals now, it seems so obvious to me what the problem was. They weren’t eating enough foods with enough nutrients. Quite often the menus would consist of a lot of grilled chicken and rice. This is suspiciously missing any vegetables. Or I would see a lot of Salad with grilled chicken, which sounds good, it’s a salad! You may be thinking now what’s the problem with the salad, it is a vegetable? The problem with salad is it is usually just lettuce. Very seldom are the salads my clients are eating full of a variety of vegetables.
When the body is not getting enough nutrients that it can actually process (in the form of whole foods), it is actually in a form of starvation. Your body is starving for nutrients. When your body is starving for nutrients, then it will hang on to every ounce of food you are consuming to try and get enough to function properly… hence weight gain.
If you are struggling to lose weight, my suggesting is stop reducing and start adding. Adding vegetables that is. Don’t like the taste of vegetables? Well that is another blog post. Keep tuned in, and that too will be answered.
