If you are reading the title and thinking that you are not really a food addict, then think again. If you are struggling with your weight because you can’t stay away from the treats, then you are a food addict. If you quit a weight loss program because it’s too hard to stick to, chances you are a food addict. If you have ever had a treat when you are on a diet, chances you are a food addict. If you ever ‘cheated’ on your diet, you are food addict.
People who are not addicted to food, never ‘cheat’ because they choose whether they want to eat a food or not, there is no ‘cheating’ or ‘binging’ or ‘deprivation’. Can you imagine losing weight without feeling deprivation or going on a binge or cheating on your diet??? It is possible, and that is what I teach people to do.
Many people are in denial about food addiction, or what I believe is, most people are confused as to what food addiction is exactly. I hear people comment, “Well what can you do if you have a food addiction? You can’t not eat food.”
Wikipedia defines food addiction as: “A food addiction or eating addiction is a behavioral addiction that is characterized by the compulsive consumption of palatable (or really good tasting) foods – the types of food which markedly activate the reward system in the brain in humans and other animals – despite adverse consequence.”
People are not addicted to ALL foods. I have yet to meet a person who has a problem with binging on broccoli when they are on a weight loss program. From the clients I see, I would comfortably say that food addiction is more common that we even comprehend. After all, this is what food companies count on and do research on. They do research to find our pleasure point with foods. They add sugars, salt and chemicals until they can hit our pleasure point with foods. They do this to keep us buying their highly processed, sugared up, and chemicalized products, so they make lots of money. And we are totally hooked.
Bottom line is if you keep consuming foods that you know are not good for you, and can’t seem to stop. You absolutely are a food addict.
