We talk to ourselves inside our heads all the times. Generally if life is not going the way we would like it to be, then that talk we say inside our heads can be pretty nasty.
For example. When someone is trying to lose weight and they are struggling with cheating on their diet plan. They may tell themselves, that they are such a loser. They may say to themselves that they are nothing more than a fat cow. They may tell themselves that they are failures, again.
This self-talk is the thoughts that bounce around inside our head. But the problem with some of this self-talk, is we begin to believe it. When we tell ourselves things over and over, we begin to think it is fact.
A person may begin to believe that it is a fact, that they are a fat cow. They may begin to believe that it is a fact, that they are a failure. They may begin to believe it is a fact that they are indeed a loser. The more they tell themselves these negative things, the more they see them as fact and begin to live as if these statements are true.
But what if the same person changed their thoughts about themselves and the statements they told themselves what would the results be?
What if a person began to think to themselves, I’m in the process of finding the right diet plan for me, instead of I’m such a loser at trying to lose weight. If they began to tell themselves, I’m maintaining my weight, rather than they are nothing more than a fat cow. If they told themselves I’m constantly learning about how weight loss works best for me, instead of I’m such a failure.
They may in fact start to feel better about themselves. When a person feels better about themselves, it is easier to make the changes a person is attempting to make in life.
I would like for you to try it for yourself. Get a sheet of paper and divide it in two (as in two columns). Then write on the top left side - What I used to tell myself. Then on the top right side write
– What I tell myself now.
The on the left write down all the nasty things you tell yourself. Then on the right side, re-write that statement with more positive feeling words. If you need help coming up with a more positive statement, then contact me and I can help.
I would love to hear how you make out with this little exercise. You can contact me through my website contact form, and let me know how it’s making a difference for you.
